+Chagas disease, a potentially deadly condition caused by a parasite carried by insects called kissing bugs, should now be considered endemic in the United States, experts say – and without recognition that it’s a constant presence in some parts of the country, more people will suffer unnecessarily.

-If Carlo Zanella, president of the Alto Adige Alpine Clubhad his waytravel influencers would be banned from the Dolomites.+A report on the topic was published last week in the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s journal Emerging Infectious Diseasesand the authors say they hope that growing global attention on the new paper means Chagas could finally get the surveillanceprevention and testing efforts and research funding it deserves in the United States.

-He blames them for the latest Italian social media trendwhich has lured hundreds of thousands of tourists to the mountain range in northern Italy, with many traipsing across private land to get that perfect shot.+“We’ve been waiting forever; all of us Chagas people have been waiting for people to recognize this disease is in our communities,” said Dr. Norman Beatty, coauthor of the report and a clinical associate professor at the University of Florida College of Medicine’s Division of Infectious Diseases & Global Medicine who has studied Chagas for the past decade.
+The World Health Organization considers Chagas a neglected tropical diseaseand the Pan American Health Organization says it is endemic – with a constant presence or usual prevalence – in 21 other countries in the Americas, not including the United States. Chagas is one of the leading causes of heart disease in Latin America, and it causes more disability than other insect-borne infections, even more than malaria and Zika, studies show.

-In response to the influxfrustrated local farmers have set up turnstileswhere tourists must pay 5 euros (nearly $6) to access several “Instagrammable” spotsincluding the Seceda and Drei Zinnen (Three Peaks) mountain ranges.+Chagas largely spreads when triatomine bugs, commonly known as kissing bugs, bite a human while they’re sleeping. The bug defecates in that bite or on a person’s face, and the person unwittingly wipes the feces into their eyesnose or mouth. The feces can carry a parasiteTrypanosoma cruzithat causes the disease.

-Photos showing lines of up to 4,000 people a day, have been popping up on social media in recent weeks. But rather than deter people from coming, the images have acted as a magnet.+Chagas can also spread through contaminated food or bloodorgan transplants and pregnancy.

-“The media’s been talking about the turnstileseveryone’s been talking about it,” says Zanella. “And people go where everyone else goesWe’re sheep.+Early symptoms can include feverbody achesheadaches, rash, vomiting and tirednessThey may last weeks or even months after initial infection.

-Italian law mandates free access to natural parkssuch as the Alps and Dolomitesbut the landowners who set up the turnstiles say they have yet to receive any official pushback from authorities.+According to the CDCabout 20% to 30% of people who’ve been infected develop more serious problems like long-term digestive and nervous system conditionsheart failure, stroke or death.

-Georg Rabansera former Italian national team snowboarder who owns land in a meadow on Secedatold the Ladin-language magazine La Usc he and others started charging tourists to cross their land to make a point.+If it’s caught earlythe disease can be cured with benznidazole or nifurtimoxmedicines that kill the parasite. But the drugs become less effective the longer a person has been infected, and most people remain unaware of the disease. Many doctors don’t think to look for it in patients in the US, the new report noted.

-“So many people come through here every dayeveryone goes through our properties and leaves trash,” he says“Ours was cry for helpWe expected call from the provincial authoritiesBut nothing. We only read statements in the newspapersGossip; nothing concrete. We havent even received warning lettersSo were moving forward.+In fact, some people who are infected find out some time laterwhen they donate bloodsince the US has been testing its blood supply for Chagas since 2007.
